With the growth in popularity of weight loss jabs, including Wegovy or Mounjaro and the impending holiday season. There has been a great increase in demand and usage of these jabs. But an often overlooked aspect of weight loss injections is their effect on your teeth. As experts in dental insurance, we are always eager to examine how new health trends impact oral health.
Dentists are raising concerns about the impact on oral health, noting that these jabs can lead to tooth decay, dry mouth, and bad breath.
Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, confirmed there are multiple side effects, some indirect, and has suggested ways to address them...
Craving for sweeter foods
Some individuals using weight loss jabs have reported changes in taste, often experiencing a metallic or altered flavor in their mouth.
The altered eating habits and metabolism associated with these injections can sometimes disrupt the balance of bacteria in the mouth.
"This can influence dietary choices and potentially lead to increased cravings for sweeter foods, raising the risk of cavities," explained Nyree.
Losing interest in favorite foods
Changes in taste may cause you to lose interest in your favorite foods and develop a liking for things you previously avoided.
"Some celebrities have reported that they simply don’t enjoy the taste of food as much as they did before taking a weight loss jab," said Nyree, "and this seems to be a common side effect."
Cavities caused by vomiting and nausea
Nausea and vomiting are among the more common side effects of weight loss jabs.
"If you’ve been sick, avoid brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes afterwards as stomach acid can soften tooth enamel," said Nyree.
"Brushing too soon can spread the acid across the teeth, leading to enamel erosion. Your mouth may feel fresher, but there is a risk of long-term damage."
Dry mouth turning into gum disease
Weight loss drugs can decrease saliva production, resulting in a dry mouth.
Saliva is crucial for maintaining healthy bacteria levels and neutralizing acid in the mouth, protecting teeth against decay.
Nyree said: "If you experience a consistently dry mouth, you’ll be at increased risk, so it’s important to address symptoms early."
Acid reflux and bad breath
Acid reflux is another potential side effect of taking fat loss jabs.
It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the mouth and can contribute to enamel erosion, increased sensitivity, or the risk of cavities.
Nyree said: "If you notice your teeth becoming sensitive and relief doesn’t come from using a sensitive toothpaste, go and see your dentist."
