A Crown will be needed for your tooth if it has sustained damage that is too serious for a filling.  This could be caused by a failed filling or a fracture to a tooth. It is a permanent solution for a damaged tooth, with a tooth shaped cap that voeres the entire visible portion of your tooth. When completed it allows your tooth to function just like any other tooth.  Crowns come in a variety of materials, the type available would be dependant on your dental insurance plan, but check out porcelain crowns that are indistinguisable from natural teeth.

When you have a Crown fitted, it will involve at least two visits to the dentist.  One to have the tooth prepared and to take an impression and fit a temporary cover. Secondly to have the Crown is fitted and cemented into place.

Why Have a Crown?

If you are diagnosed with a tooth with sufficient damage to require a Crown, you shouldn't put it off.  having dental insurance allows you to take out this treatment without worrying about the costs involved.  By having a Crown, you are also protecting the other teeth around the damaged one, which should prevent further tooth decay.  A Crown can also improve the look of your mouth and thus your appearance.  As long as you care for your Crown, it should last for years.

What are the Alternatives to a Crown?

If you aren't sure that you want a Crown, or you don't have the dental insurance to cover it, there are other possible alternatives:

  • Veneers: A thin moulding, custom made for your tooth from porcelain and bonded to the front of the tooth.  They can also be used to fill tooth gaps where orthondic treatment is not suitable or may not have worked.

  • Fillings: In some cases a filling may work, but it is less of a long term solution than a Crown and could involve more expensive treatment further down the line, especially if other teeth become damaged.

If you want to make sure you are covered for key dental treatment like this, please contact us today to ensure you have the dental insurance cover that you and your employees need.

We have been delighted with Get Dental and would highly recommend it to individuals or other companies for dental insurance. The policy is inexpensive and gives a wide cover of all aspects of dental care.

Our practice has greatly benefited from working with Get Dental Plans mainly as a result of the Corporate dental plan from BUPA as this allows patients to receive the treatment they need rather than the treatment they can afford.
